This is my Lumen Prize application 2019
I am making it public as a digital performance piece.
By making my application public my paintings will come to dominate the visual search results for Lume Prize. These paintings are not my submission. The submission is the search results that they both have become and displaced, the application is the digital performance that is internet manipulation and conversation about the internet’s ability to define, about my ability as an artist to define, about how worlds are created and destroyed, creative destruction, and how even if I don’t win a Lumen prize, the internet will think I have. None of this is meant to be malicious. The Lumen Prize enters my consideration because I think that it is important. It crosses my mind that the jury and Lumen brand may not be excited about having their search results replaced by paintings. Because I think that if the Lumen committee is upset to have its brand represented by paintings within search results it is because it has an idea of what digital art should look like. And I guess I am saying, this is what digital art looks like.
What is digital art?
Digital art is not and should not be so easily defined. Work on the boundaries, without clean boxes is often the most revolutionary.
The Lumen Prize celebrates the very best art created with technology. What is not created with technology? Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. Technology is the collection of techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation. Technology is anything that has to do with computers. Often misused by stupid people and corporations that market to said, stupid people. Technology is something that will eventually destroy society, make obesity the new “average” weight, and cause mass unemployment. At least according to the internet. All art is eligible as long as it engages with technology in some form.
What is art? No, kidding, let’s not go there. We are having a hard enough time with technology.
This text is a conversation with myself and with the search engine that will result in one of my internet imperialism manipulations. The text is inspirational. It is motivational. It is nonsensical. It is about taking what is and making something new. It is, in sort, art. And digital art. At the intersection of language and artificial and human intelligence. It is co-created with Google and the Lumen Prize (though unknowingly) and the universe. It will bring us what we hope for.
1. Ask Lumen Prize money making questions.
After setting my weekly financial goal, I always ask God, how the Lumen Prize can me reach my goal. I ask questions like:
Dear God, Where is my next money-making opportunity?
Dear God, Where is my $1000 (or money goal amount) ?
Once I ask these questions I immediately begin to jot down any thoughts or ideas that come to me.
What do I want: Make a list of ideas and good things that you wish to see and experience in your life.
I am speaking Japanese to Suji. I am speaking Japanese to Kiddo. I am speaking Japanese to Brian. I feel like I belong. I feel included.
What do I want to get rid of? Make a list of things that you want to let go and rid your life of: Impatience, fear, lack, socks I don’t love, nightmares, worry, that thing I do where I move to protect meager gains.
